Vortex Silver At AA Provincials
|
After a slow start, the Burlington petite Vortex won five straight games to reach the gold-medal game at the provincial AA ringette championships in Whitby.
Despite losing a tight 3-2 decision to Mississauga in the final, the squad's silver medal was still the best-ever result by a Burlington team at provincials.
Although Burlington struck first in the gold-medal game, Mississauga answered with three straight goals. The Vortex pulled within one but were unable to get the equalizer.
Burlington opened the round robin with a 4-1 loss to Mississauga. After squaring their record by doubling Cambridge 6-3, the Vortex were blanked 3-0 by the host Whitby.
With little margin for error, Burlington stayed in contention with a 5-3 win over Hamilton and the next day topped Ottawa 6-1. Facing the tournament's top seed, Elora-Fergus, Burlington played a near flawless game and posted a convincing 12-4 victory.
With four teams tied with 4-2 records, Burlington had to play a 10-minute mini-game with Ottawa to see who would advance. The Vortex scored early but Ottawa tied the game in the final minute to force overtime. In the extra period, with the Vortex shorthanded, Burlington's Julia Fowlie was awarded a penalty shot. She made no mistake to send Burlington to the gold-medal game.
Burlington's Christine Jurk led the tournament in scoring with 14 goals and 20 points. Also scoring were Brooke Rathie with seven goals and four assists and Fowlie with five goals and three assists. Courtney Kester led the tournament with seven assists while Emily Hampson had three.
